
Guwahati, April 10, 2026 — Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam concluded peacefully at 5 p.m. on Thursday (April 9, 2026), with an estimated voter turnout of 85.21 per cent, officials said. The turnout marks a notable increase from 82.04 per cent recorded in the 2021 Assembly elections, indicating strong voter participation across the state.
Assam witnessed enthusiastic voting throughout the day, with long queues seen at polling stations and significant participation from women, youth, and first-time voters. The highest voter turnout of 95.17 per cent was recorded in South Salmara Mankachar district, highlighting exceptional grassroots engagement.
Polling remained largely peaceful, with only minor incidents reported from a few areas. Extensive security arrangements were put in place by the Election Commission of India to ensure smooth conduct across all constituencies.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is seeking to retain power, banking on its governance record and development agenda. The opposition Indian National Congress has mounted a strong challenge, raising issues such as unemployment, price rise, and flood management.
Regional parties like the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also witnessed significant voter mobilisation in their strongholds.
Polling Across Other Regions
Simultaneous elections were also held in Keralam and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Keralam recorded a voter turnout of 78.0 per cent, with Kozhikode district registering the highest at 80.89 per cent. Puducherry recorded a turnout of 89.83 per cent.
Counting on May 4
Counting of votes for Assam, along with Keralam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, will take place on May 4, 2026.
