Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan on November 24, 2025. Known for his calm and persuasive method of handling disputes, he aims to make the Supreme Court’s growing pendency – now over 90,000 cases – more manageable during his tenure.
Ahead of his swearing-in, Justice Kant said he has never felt pressured by social media, calling it “unsocial media,” and emphasised that judicial decisions must rest solely on law and facts.
A part of several key rulings – including the Article 370 verdict, the striking down of electoral bonds, and the Pegasus and sedition matters – Justice Kant is expected to steer major cases like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue. Born in Hisar, he rose from being Haryana’s youngest Advocate General to Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and later a Supreme Court judge.His term as CJI will continue till February 2027.
