IMPHAL, May 24: The ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur has emerged as a major challenge for authorities preparing to undertake electoral roll revision in the state ahead of future elections.

Officials associated with the exercise said large-scale displacement of people due to the violence has complicated the verification and updating of voter records in several districts. Thousands of residents continue to stay in relief camps or have temporarily relocated outside their native areas, making physical verification difficult.

Election authorities are reportedly working on special measures to ensure eligible voters are not left out of the revised rolls while also preventing duplication of entries. Areas affected by prolonged tension and security restrictions are expected to require additional administrative support during the process.

The situation has raised concerns among political parties and civil society groups over the smooth conduct of electoral preparations in the conflict-hit state. Several organisations have urged authorities to adopt a transparent and inclusive approach to protect the voting rights of displaced citizens.

Manipur has witnessed periodic violence and instability since ethnic clashes broke out last year, severely affecting normal life and governance in many parts of the state. Officials, however, maintained that efforts are underway to complete the revision process in accordance with Election Commission guidelines.
