As December approaches and winter settles over the hills of Nagaland, preparations are in full swing at Kisama Heritage Village for the annual Hornbill Festival, one of India’s most celebrated cultural events. Scheduled from December 1 to 10, the festival will once again highlight the rich traditions, art forms, and heritage of Nagaland’s many tribes.

         Walking through Kisama, visitors find themselves surrounded by traditional morungs—each uniquely built and decorated to reflect the spirit of the tribe it represents.The festival grounds throb with energy as dancers perform powerful war dances, graceful folk routines, and rhythmic musical numbers, all without losing their authenticity. Alongside these performances, traditional games such as Naga wrestling, log drum rituals, and indigenous archery offer a glimpse into the strength and skill that define Naga culture 

Local cuisine remains one of the festival’s biggest draws, with preparations underway for stalls serving smoked pork, bamboo shoot curries, axone-based dishes, wild herbs, and freshly brewed rice beer. Handwoven textiles, bamboo crafts, jewellery, and wooden carvings will also be on display, reflecting the craftsmanship of the Naga tribes.

The craft section is set to be equally impressive, with stalls brimming with handwoven textiles, bamboo art, jewellery, and wooden carvings showcasing Naga craftsmanship at its finest.

As evening falls, Kisama Village will take on a festive glow, with the Night Bazaar, live bands, and cultural shows adding vibrancy to the celebrations.

More than just an annual event, the Hornbill Festival continues to serve as a warm invitation into the soul of Nagaland—its people, traditions, and stories. Beautifully curated yet deeply rooted, it remains one of the most enriching cultural experiences in Northeast India.
