In a momentous stride toward progress and development in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated Assam’s longest flyover, the Nilachal Flyover, spanning an impressive 2.63 kilometers. This remarkable infrastructure project, linking Maligaon Chariali to Kamakhya Gate in Guwahati, comes to fruition at a cost of Rs 420.75 crore, an achievement marked by its completion within a swift 35-month timeline.
Addressing the public during the inauguration, Chief Minister Sarma expressed profound satisfaction at the timely realization of this record-breaking flyover. Recognizing the longstanding necessity for a flyover at Maligaon, one of Guwahati’s busiest traffic routes, he emphasized the aim to enhance the ease of commuting for the city’s residents, a significant portion of Northeast India’s population.
Acknowledging the challenges inherent in constructing a flyover within a bustling area like Maligaon, Chief Minister Sarma extended his gratitude to the people of Guwahati for their unwavering cooperation throughout the construction period. He also commended various government departments and construction firms for their efficient contributions to this ambitious project.
Chief Minister Sarma shared his vision of additional infrastructure endeavors, including a flyover connecting Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to Maa Kamakhya Temple and another bridge over the Brahmaputra, linking Pandu with the Shakti Peeth. Plans encompass a new terminal at Guwahati Airport, a 6-lane road connecting Dharapur with Jalukbari, a flyover at Dharapur Chariali, and a rotary in front of Deepor Beel.
The Chief Minister outlined upcoming flyovers at Bharalumukh Railway Crossing, in front of Rajiv Bhawan, and other strategic locations. He noted that the bidding process for a 6-kilometer flyover between the Reserve Bank office and Bamunimaidam has concluded, with construction set to commence soon. Additionally, the eagerly awaited bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati will be inaugurated during next year’s Durga Puja.
He expressed confidence that the forthcoming Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge over the Brahmaputra will stand as an architectural marvel, rivaling the beauty of the Mumbai Sea Link bridge. A ropeway project connecting Kamakhya Railway Station to Maa Kamakhya Temple is slated for operation before the 2026 elections.
Chief Minister Sarma disclosed that three flyovers will be inaugurated in Silchar on September 7, with further flyovers planned for Barpeta Road, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh in the near future. Construction for the bridge linking Suwalkuchi with Palasbari will commence within the next 4-5 months.
Lastly, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma assured that the proposed “ring road” around Guwahati will soon become a reality, and he anticipates that all these transformative projects will be realized by 2030.
