Guwahati: One of Guwahati’s most ambitious infrastructure projects – the six-lane bridge connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati (Amingaon) over the Brahmaputra is now in its final stage, with Chief Minister announcing at a recent press conference that the bridge will open before February 20. The announcement has brought renewed excitement and relief among citizens, who have long awaited a faster and more reliable link across the river.

Touted as a game-changer for Guwahati’s connectivity, the bridge is expected to significantly ease chronic congestion, ensure smoother inter-bank movement, and spur economic growth across the northern corridor of the city. It is also likely to boost residential, commercial, educational, and industrial activities in North Guwahati and Amingaon.

Far from being just another river crossing, the six-lane extradosed bridge has been conceived as a landmark structure, both aesthetically and functionally. Built to handle heavy traffic volumes, it is being constructed with an estimated lifespan of at least 100 years. The structure will feature a modern bridge-health monitoring system enabling real-time detection of structural stress and maintenance needs, ensuring enhanced safety and durability.

For decades, connectivity across the Brahmaputra has largely depended on Saraighat Bridge, Bharalumukh’s old DC Road bridge, and the newer Saraighat II. With increasing traffic and expanding urban limits, the new bridge is expected to distribute vehicular pressure and ease daily commute for thousands of residents.

With the Chief Minister reiterating the government’s commitment and confirming the opening in February, public anticipation has reached a peak. Once inaugurated, the Guwahati–North Guwahati (Amingaon) bridge is set to redefine how Guwahati moves, grows, and connects marking a major milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development.
