Aizawl, Nov 20: Mizoram has completed over 58% of the biometric enrolment of more than 31,000 Myanmar refugees living across all 11 districts, officials said. The enrolment drive, launched in July on the Home Ministry’s directive, is being carried out through the Foreigners Identification Portal and Biometric Enrolment system.
A total of 31,214 Myanmar nationals, mostly from Chin State, are currently in the state, with Champhai district hosting the highest number, according to information available in media platforms. Mizoram is also sheltering 2,354 refugees from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts -mainly in Lawngtlai, Lunglei, and Thenzawl -along with 6,953 internally displaced people from Manipur.
Officials said the biometric process is progressing smoothly in relief camps but is slowed in remote areas due to poor internet connectivity, technical issues, and the difficulty of locating refugees staying with relatives or in rented homes.
Despite these challenges, the state continues the enrolment drive to ensure accurate documentation of all refugees.
