Guwahati: The ruling BJP registered a landslide victory in Tiwa Autonomous Council polls winning 33 of 36 seats, the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) said on Saturday.
BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won two seats, while the opposition Congress won just one seat. The ruling party defeated the Congress in most of the seats it won .
Voting for the 36 constituencies of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, spread across Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai and Kamrup Metro districts in Assam, took place on December 17. A total of 124 candidates were in the fray and over 71 percent of the voters exercised their franchise.
Just moths ahead of state polls which is due early 2021, BJP has has shown impressive performance in the back-to-back elections in Bodoland Territorial Council and Tiwa Autonomous Council.
